Thursday, January 1st, 2015 -- Families in Colonia San Rafael Receive Free Testing and Health Information
FEMAP’s Community Education and Health Promotion program partnered with Siguiendo los Pasos de Jesus (SPJ) to host health fairs at three colonias located in the outskirts of the municipality of Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua.
Recently, a fair was held at Colonia San Rafael, located on Kilometer 30. The FEMAP nursing and medical students set up at San Mateo Church to provide diabetes, cardiovascular disease and bone density testing. Participants also received information on nutrition and healthy habits.
The goal of FEMAP’s Community Education and Health Promotion program is to provide preventive medical care and education in marginalized areas of the municipality of Cd. Juarez with the help of the Promotoras de Salud Comunitarias (Community Volunteer Health Promoters).
In 1973, Guadalupe Arizpe de De la Vega established the first community health outreach worker model in Mexico and the Americas with the goal of providing family planning, education and training. By 1973, the Promotoras de Salud Comunitarias.
Since then, the Promotoras have ensure that families in their neighborhoods have access to preventive medicine, birth control and information on how to better care for their families. In 2014, 36 health fairs were held, benefitting 1,282 people in Ciudad Juarez.
